Quick answer

Draw several large letters and shapes on a safe paved area. Name one and ask your child to walk, step or jump to it. Keep the game short and allow the child to call out directions too.

Skills supported

  • Letter and shape recognition
  • Listening and following directions
  • Gross motor coordination and balance
  • Visual scanning and attention

Make it easier

  • Begin with three familiar shapes.
  • Give one instruction at a time and point if needed.
  • Walk or point instead of jumping.

Make it more challenging

  • Ask for the sound made by a letter.
  • Give a two-step direction: “Touch the circle, then walk to S.”
  • Add numbers and count movements.

Safety and limits

Use an area completely separated from moving vehicles, roads, pools, stairs and bicycles. Check that the surface is dry, even and not slippery. Children should wear suitable footwear and remain supervised. Recognition develops over time; provide help without turning the path into a test.
