Quick answer

Take two to six colour cards into a safe garden, park or outdoor area. Invite your child to find something that matches each colour, such as a green leaf, brown stick or yellow flower. Pointing or taking a photo works just as well as collecting.

  • Sorting, comparing and gross motor movement

Make it easier

  • Use only two easy-to-find colours such as green and brown.
  • Point to an item and ask your child to match it to the card.
  • Photograph items instead of collecting them.

Make it more challenging

  • Look for light and dark shades of one colour.
  • Find three items for each card.
  • Sort items by colour, size or texture and describe them.

Safety and limits

Stay close, use an area away from roads and water, and check current weather and sun conditions. Do not touch or collect mushrooms, berries, insects, sharp objects, animal waste or unknown plants. Consider allergies and wash hands afterwards. This is an observation game, not a test of colour knowledge.
