What you need
- Large pom poms in two or more colours
- Small bowls or containers
- Optional child-safe tongs or tweezers

How to set it up
- Place mixed pom poms in one bowl.
- Put an empty bowl beside each colour.
- Show one example: “Red goes here.”
- Invite the child to continue.
- When finished, count or make a pattern if the child is interested.

Make it easier
Use two clearly different colours, fewer pom poms and fingers instead of tongs. Place one matching pom pom in each bowl as a model.
Make it harder
Add more colours, sort by size, count each group or copy a sequence such as red-blue-red-blue. Ask the child to explain their sorting rule.
Safety
Pom poms are small objects and may be a choking risk. Supervise closely and do not use them with a child who still mouths objects. Choose materials for the child’s current stage rather than relying only on age.
